Chapter Twenty-Four

Spring in Davis didn’t disappoint—seventy degrees and sunny. Riding alongside Paige was no disappointment either. Fortunately, she didn’t have to pay attention to where they were going. With Paige leading, she let herself relax and enjoy things like the way Paige kept looking in her direction. Along with the sexy way Paige’s forearm muscles tensed and shifted as she gripped the handlebars.

“First stop—the bookstore. Because any town with an independent bookstore is automatically cool.” Paige parked her bike and pulled out a chain lock. “I didn’t get you a bike lock. We’ll have to chain ours together.”

Seren sidled her cruiser up to Paige’s, not at all upset to watch her new bike get chained to Paige’s. Paige tugged off her helmet. “Ready?”

Browsing with Paige was nice. They chatted about books and Seren almost decided on picking up the newest N.K. Jemisin novel when Paige held up an “I Heart Davis” magnet. With a wink, she headed to the checkout counter. As soon as they stepped out of the store, she handed the bag with the magnet to Seren.

“What am I going to do with a Davis magnet?”

“By the end of today, you’re gonna want to put that on your fridge where you can see it all the time.” Paige grinned. “Next stop, the Co-op. It might not be exactly cool, but they make good sandwiches.”

Seren rocked her head side to side. “I don’t know. I think the Co-op is kind of cool—in an overpriced, patchouli-scented vegan hipster kind of way.”

Coolness was hard to measure, Seren decided, as they walked down the aisles of the Co-op. Maybe Davis was cooler than she gave it credit for. When she’d moved away for college, her impressions of the town were all tied with being an unhappy teenager who hadn’t really found her way in the world. Sure, she had her music, but aside from Leslie she didn’t have friends. And unlike Leslie, who’d bopped from boyfriend to boyfriend throughout high school, she hadn’t dated.

After college she’d spent so much energy bashing the town, and avoiding coming back, that she hadn’t really considered the good parts. Then when she had finally come back, of course, everything had gotten worse in her life. Until, well, recently.

“You okay?”

Without realizing it, she’d stopped walking. Paige studied her from across a display of strawberries.

“I’m good.” She held up the wrapped sandwiches they’d selected from the deli counter. “Fantasizing about eating these.”

Paige squinted at her. “That was your happy fantasizing face?”

“Not exactly. Was I making a weird expression?”

Paige bit the edge of her lip. “A little, yeah. But I’m not going to push it if you don’t want to say what you were thinking. Strawberries?”

Seren dropped her chin. “I don’t want you to think I’m some big-city snob because I don’t like Davis.”

Paige didn’t respond, clearly waiting for her to go on. She took a deep breath and let it out slow, glancing around at the produce. Her gaze settled on the avocados, all stacked up in a perfect green pyramid.
